Minnesota expanded its sick leave law on August 1. What does this mean for my business?

In a nutshell, if you offer employees a sick leave benefit, such as paid time off (PTO) or paid sick leave, employees are now able to use that benefit to care for more than just themselves or their child. 

Prior to the new law taking effect, employers in Minnesota who offered sick leave benefits so that employees could take care of their own illness or injury had to allow employees to use the benefit to care for their minor child’s illness or injury.  Beginning August 1, employees who are given sick leave benefits can now use the benefits to take care of their adult child, spouse, sibling, parent, grandparent or stepparent.
